New England has produced some of the National Hockey League’s great talent, but let’s see how many of them have won the ultimate prize, the Stanley Cup.

First, let’s take a look at what states New England’s NHL players are from and how many have won a Stanley Cup as players.

Massachusetts leads the way with 23 out of its 201 players having won a cup. In second, Connecticut has 6 out of 33 players who have won a championship. Tied for third are Maine (1 of 8), New Hampshire (1 of 14), Rhode Island (1 of 20), and Vermont (1 of 2).

It’s not easy to make it to the NHL, and even if you do it is much more difficult to win the Stanley Cup. The next few graphs show the percentage rate of players who have won a Stanley Cup from each state.

Every one of these players had to play for a team when they won their championship. Let’s see what team these players played for when they won their cup.

The Pittsburgh Penguins lead the way for players from New England who have won a Stanley Cup. It is worth nothing that a lot of the players played for the Penguins 1991 and 1992 Stanley Cup championship teams.

Another graph shows what era these players won their Stanley Cup championships in and the teams they played for.

As the eras get closer to the present there were more players from New England winning the Stanley Cup. It is worth noting that the number of players from New England increased each era. The Founding Era had 15 total players that played in the NHL. The Original Six Era saw a decrease with only seven players. The Expansion Era had 88 players and the Modern Era currently has 91 players. The number of championships won increasing in the Expansion and Modern Eras could be attributed to the fact that more teams were created, which means more opportunities for more New England players to be in the NHL.

A notable player on this chart is Myles Lane, who is the only New England player to win a Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins. A Melrose, Massachusetts native, Lane won the cup in 1929, defeating the New York Rangers 2–0 in a best of three series. Even more interesting is the Rangers were actually his former team during that same year before he was traded to the Bruins and eventually defeated his old team for the cup. For those interested in reading more about his interesting life, there is an interview with him on NHL.com.
